We are all suffering through the 'dog days of summer'. Interesting phrase and good to remember. The summer temperatures are much too hot for our four legged companions. Dogs cannot regulate their body temperature well when the thermometer registers above 80 degrees much less temps in the 90's. In the summer heat a dog should never be left outside where the is no shade or cold water available and should have longer walks only early in the morning and after sunset in the evening. Mid-day walks should be brief opportunities for a pet to relieve themselves and never should a dog exercise under the summer sun. Humans have better adapted physiology for handling summer heat. After all we don't wear fur coats! Dogs are loyal companions and will try to keep up with their masters to the point of exhaustion and collapse. I have seen many a dog come to our hospital as a serious life threatening emergency because their owner took them on a run or walk expecting them to have the same degree of stamina. Too often they die. Once a dog's temperature starts to go up from heat exhaustion / heat stroke it can escalate and cause death within 30 minutes. The warning signs are brief and it may be too late once they start. .

We are all suffering through the ‘dog days of summer’. Interesting phrase and good to remember. The summer temperatures are much too hot for our four legged companions. Dogs cannot regulate their body temperature well when the thermometer registers above 80 degrees much less temps in the 90′s. After all we don’t wear fur coats! Dogs are loyal companions and will try to keep up with their masters to the point of exhaustion and collapse. I have seen many a dog come to our hospital as a serious life threatening emergency because their owner took them on a run or walk expecting them to have the same degree of stamina. Too often they die. Once a dog’s temperature starts to go up from heat exhaustion / heat stroke it can escalate and cause death within 30 minutes. The warning signs are brief and it may be too late once they start.

1. Excessive panting.

2. Bright red gums.

3. Fatigue.

4. Dizziness.

5. Collapse.

What should you do if this happens?

1. Immediately cool and saturate your dog’s entire body and paws with a lot of cold water. If you are in a neighborhood look for a garden hose. If you are home put your dog in the tub with the cold shower running and use ice especially on the wrists, groin, paws and neck.

2. Call your Veterinarian and alert them of the situation and follow their advice.

Prevention:

1. Walk / exercise as recommended. Early in the morning, a quick mid-day then a walk after sunset, .

2. Take a bottle of ice cold water with you when you exercise to have available for a dog in need.

The information provided are only general guidelines presented by a licensed Veterinarian in South Florida. You should consult your Veterinarian for more specific information and advice regarding this topic as it occurs in your geographic location.
